Alex Shabunya was born on 4 October, 1977, in Novopolotsk, Republic of Belarus. His parents are Oleg Gavrilovitch Shabunya and Eugenia Viktorovna Semezh.
Before going into bodybuilding Alex was keen on boxing, wrestling and skiing. In 1994 he got married. His wife Irina is perhaps Alex’s most persistent fan. But she is more than just a fan: Irina helps Alex in everything. As everyone is well aware, understanding and support of the family members and especially of one’s significant other is fundamental to success in any business.
In 1995 Alex for the first time entered the training gym; it was then that his enthusiasm for bodybuilding began. Alex’s first coach was Sergey Muchenko, a well-known bodybuilding expert in the Republic of Belarus.
In 1996 another significant event occurred: Alex was hired by the Republic's Emergency Control Ministry, where he still works as a fire fighter.
In 1997 Alex Shabunya began participating in bodybuilding competitions: at first in the tournaments organized by WABBA and since 1998 – in IFBB events. Alex Shabunya seven times won the title of overall champion of the Republic of Belarus.
In 2005 Alex Shabunya’s competitive career entered a new stage. Having become a member of IronWorld Club he moved to Minsk and continued working out without his coach. The year 2005 also brought him the most considerable successes – the title of overall champion of the Eastern Europe and the winner of Ironman and IronWorld Grand Prix.
In 2006 brings Shabunya as joy and disappointment. After a series of victories at the various tournaments in Germany, Estonia and England, Alex gets a knee injury, which permanently knocks him out. However, as it turned out later, Alex has not abandoned sport due to injury, but instead continued to actively exercise. This proved Shabunya back in 2010 - took second place at the World Amateur Championships. In addition, in the same year Shabunya won the Grand Prix of Empire Fitness in Moscow, to dispel rumors of his retirement from bodybuilding.
 In 2012, Alex became the absolute winner Amateur Euro Cup and won a pro card, Alex train hard and prepare for a professional tournament and is going to win the much greater height than the ones he had already won.
